Back in 2017 it was announced that new legislation regarding firearms would come into effect on 1 July 2017 and as we previously mentioned license holders had until 30 June 2018 to comply. SAPOL have posted handy reference material outlining the changes, all of which can be found on their website and more importantly have recently made the following statement:

"It is known in some cases recent demand for compliant safes has exceeded supplies currently available at some retail outlets. Licensees who have not yet upgraded their safe or achieved compliance by other means, but who are able to produce evidence of having ordered a new safe (e.g. receipt, invoice, purchase order) or are actively in the process of achieving compliance in the short term are advised to produce those documents or evidence to police officers if the need arises.  This includes those who have received Registrar approval for the use of prescribed safes or storage in some other manner as approved by the Registrar."

Thankfully Lock Supplies stock of Gun Safes in Adelaide was not effected and it is good news for those who are yet to meet the requirements!

If you are in the need of a new Gun Safe in South Australia, the following will help determine a suitable Safe to meet your needs.

One of the changes was the addition of Levels for A+B Class storage, these are categorized by 'Level 1' and 'Level 2'

What is a Level 1 Safe?

Level 1 requires the safe to be constructed of a minimum 2mm structural grade steel.

What is a Level 2 Safe?

Level 2 requires the safe to be constructed of a minimum 3mm structural grade steel.

When should the required 'Level' be considered (for A+B Class firearms)?

Level 1 : Firearms are kept under main roof of your residence/premises.

Level 2 : Firearms are kept in an outbuilding.

as a side note; Category C,D or H all require Level 2 storage whether under main roof or in an outbuilding.

Do i need to bolt my safe down?

All safes (Level 1 and Level 2) If weighing less than 150Kg when empty must be bolted with at least 2 solid anchor bolts to a solid concrete, metal or timber floor, wall or other permanent internal structure of the building or outbuilding in which it is located.

For more complex applications, for example more than 19 firearms in your possession - requirements such as CCTV and/or Intruder Alarms need to be installed. Read about the different Tiers here

As much as SAPOL have stated there will be some leniency, they have not set the length of this 'extended grace period' - so best to act now or risk loss of license and firearms
