We've all been there. Lost your keys somewhere in the house (probably in a 'safe' place), kids have thrown your keys down some kind of hole... or the battery in the key fob has been going flat for weeks and you 'keep meaning to get the battery replaced' and then it flat out dies on you? This is an inevitable but truly frustrating situation and one which happens right when you need to get somewhere. Simple car keys are a bit easier to replace/get cut however the newer your car the more technology you have to contend with when it comes to fixing your problem.
Calling us at Lock Supplies will be a great first step. We can assess for you what type of car key you have and the problem with it. Is it a conventional car key which has snapped, bent or is lost? Is it a car key fob which needs a new battery? Or is it a smart key for your keyless ignition car? Depending on your answer determines how we can assist you and what the cost will be.
If your ignition barrel inside your car is broken, we can replace that.
If your caravan keys have gone missing, we can cut new ones.
If you are after a more secure option for your motorhome, we have choices.
Think of us next time something breaks, stops working or is lost in regards to your car keys. Give us a call and we will help you figure it out!
]]>
There are some simple and very cost effective ways to combat this situation and prevent a locksmith call out fee.
1. Get a spare key cut and leave in a Key Safe attached to your house.
2. Get a spare key cut and leave with a friend or relative that lives close by.
This will prevent a lock out … and Murphy's law... this will usually occur after hours which attracts a larger service fee for a locksmith to help you or when you are in a rush/needing to attend an appointment.
Remove this stress from your life. Got some spare time? Grab your key and take it into your nearest Locksmith shop to get it cut. Cut a few, one for each member of the household. One for your Key Safe and one for your relative or friend nearby.
Or better yet, when you able to, purchase a Digital Lock for your front door and do away with keys altogether! Don't forget we offer Afterpay and Zip Money online and in store!

We've been told over and over again, to reduce the spread of germs, we need to reduce our touch of surfaces, wash our hands with soap, use antibacterial gel, etc. We have all done this. Some of us go the extra mile by using our feet, backs, elbow pits and heads to open and close doors, however this is not always practical or safe... but is always 100% fun to watch.
Perhaps we should consider the use of speciality made equipment that reduces this touch for us. Follow along for a spotlight on three very handy (less) reduce touch products.
Firstly there is a very cost effective and small product we can all be carrying around with us. The BDS Key Ring Door Opener. This compact stainless steel product is a keyring with a hook attached that can be used to open door handles, press elevator buttons and press ATM or Eftpos keys. This product is not only Australian Made and Owned, but it comes with its own bottle opener.
Second product we have on our website and recommend for germ reduction is the StepNPull. The StepNPull is a foot operated step which is attached to the bottom of any non latching commercial wood or metal door. This product is also super handy for when your hands are full and you need to open a door. Use your feet in a safe and easy way with this door step. Like the guys at StepNPull say, 'Be germ free - Go hands free'!
And lastly we have a new door handle cover from PureHold. This new technology produces a sleeve which self cleans using a silver coating to combat pathogens on the surface, 24/7. This cover is also very easy to attach to your door handles, with a 30 second install and prevents the cross contamination from every door user, all day long.
The best thing about this door handle is, that it is chemical free. The technology only uses harmless silver ions to prevent the spread of bacteria, no poisions. Each cover has a shelf life of 6 months, with a helpful time strip reminding you when it needs to be replaced.
Have a look at all these products in our Reduce Touch, Reduce Germs category, to see how cost effective and helpful they could be to your business and personal life, helping you to combat germs, 24/7.

]]>Pride can be one hurdle as to why one doesn’t call a Locksmith, another is cost. If you are trying to prevent spending money on a Locksmith to open your door without damage by smashing a window to get in .. this just doesn’t seem like a logical choice. Plus, if you can jimmy open one of your windows and slide on in to unlock your doors perhaps you need to call out a Locksmith to discuss updating your home security needs.
Locksmiths can help you at your home for other situations other than letting you in because you’ve locked yourself out.
Locksmiths can also;
⁃ Make a new key for your lock that you’ve lost
⁃ Open your car door to retrieve the keys you’ve locked inside
⁃ Remove a broken key from a lock and rekey a key even if the master key is now in pieces
⁃ You’ve forgotten the safe passcode
⁃ You need to improve your home security and need assistance fitting new locks
⁃ You’ve been broken into and you urgently need to rekey your locks so the thieves cannot return to steal more belongings.
Whilst it might feel awkward or annoying having to get someone out to help you because you’ve absentmindedly left your keys on the kitchen counter and shut the door behind you or your toddler has played a very good game of hide and seek with your car keys, Locksmiths have seen and heard it all.
Make the call out fee worth it by discussing with the Locksmith your security questions whilst they are rekeying your lock. And once they have completed the job in what feels like a few seconds, breathe a sigh of relief that you’ve gained access to your home once again without damaging any windows or doors and caused more issues than just a Locksmith call out
]]>Whilst the summer holidays are usually a time for relaxation, food, drinks and fun it can also result in us becoming relaxed with our routines and security around the home.
One only needs to do a quick google search or watch the news to see another break in or 'walk in' story of assaults, robbery, and much worse. Do not become another statistic. Do not wait until something bad happens to you or someone in your street act now and rectify some of the common mistakes people make around their home.
Firstly, lock your doors. It is surprising how many people do not lock the doors to their home when they are home. 'I am home, why do I need to lock my doors?' Many home invasions occur through unlocked doors or windows. This can occur when people are sleeping or going about their daily chores. Some thieves are so brazen or not of right mind to care if someone is home and will walk on into your home. Lock the door and stop them in their tracks!
Secondly, as stated above, lock your windows. As soon as the weather cools of at night time after a warm day there is nothing better than switching off the air-conditioning and opening up all the windows and falling asleep to the sound of the tree's rustling in the breeze outside. This is music to an opportunistic thieves ears. If you want to open your windows to let the cool air in, invest in some window locks. Window locks allow you to open the window to your desired width and then lock it into place.
Lastly, throw away all gift boxes from those amazing Christmas gifts you've spent so long saving up for. If boxes of your goods are near the bin or out the front of your home you are advertising to thieves what your new purchases are. An open catalogue of all the things they can steal when they walk through your unlocked door.
These are all basic and quick tips to ensure you don't become complacent with your home security needs. There are many other other ways you can keep on top of your security such as, home alarm systems, padlocks on gates, lighting around the home, home security cameras, etc. Start with some basic steps to ensure you are not sitting ducks and then move on to some more higher tech options to ensure your loved ones and your belongings are secure.

There are a few reasons why changing the security on your new home is vital to your protection. Some are more obvious than others however the general consensus is that changing the locks on your new home whether rental or purchased is to ensure you remain safe from opportunistic thieves.
When you move into a rental property you are moving into a home with an unknown past. You are unaware of how many tenants have occupied this space, what they got up to in the home before you or who they are as people. Some people are told to leave rental properties for many reasons and as such some people do not move willingly. This can cause tension and create hostility from the previous tenant. Now imagine that person having a key to access your new home. A key to access your home with all of your belongings.
Not everyone who leaves a rental is forced to leave. Some leave as they want to move into a different home, they have purchased a home or they are looking for a sea change. regardless of the reason they have moved from your new rental, the fact remains that you will not be told of the reason. Erring on the side of caution in relation to your home security just makes sense.
Now you might be thinking. This doesn’t matter to me. I’ve just purchased my new home i don’t have to worry about numerous tenants having keys to my home. Well, was your house ever a rental? How many people lived in your home before you? How many people used to live in your new home and have lost their house keys in the past? How many different keys are floating around unknown to you to your brand new home? Change you locks!
Now how do you go about doing this? Firstly think about what you want to do in relation to upgrading your security. Do you want to simply re-key your locks or replace them altogether? Re-keying is having a locksmith come to your home and change the tumblers on the locks. By doing this it prevents old keys being able to operate the locks. This instantly prevents anyone having access to your home and allows you to have all locks keyed alike to your home. One key for all the locks. Simple, quick and cost effective.
If you are instead keen to upgrade your lock system on your new home why not consider a digital door lock and go completely key less!? Not only will you increase the security on your home rendering any old keys completely useless and irrelevant you will also gift yourself convenience and save time when it comes to accessing your home.
Obviously there are a few different options when it comes to changing the security on your home, some cost more than others. Regardless of the cost, changing the security on your home is a must to give yourself the highest protection. Whilst someone accessing your home is unlikely, there is always a chance. Don't chance your families safety and your belongings. It’s just not worth it. Give us a call to chat through the different options available to you and we can organise products and a locksmith to attend your new home at your convenience.

Firstly, and obviously, make sure your house is LOCKED! When we say locked we mean make it hard for criminals to break in your home. Upgrade to a deadlock on your front door and ensure you have window locks installed and locked on all your windows. By locking your windows you are slowing criminals down, forcing them to make more noise if they break a window and if they get inside, slow them down trying to exit locked windows.
Secondly, secure all your valuables in a safe. If a criminal makes their way inside your home, you want to make sure your valuables are locked away in a safe. Valuables such as jewellery, family heirlooms, birth certificates and passports, bank cards or cash can all easily be stored in a safe installed within your home. Whatever is valuable to you and hard to replace, lock it up. Make sure you store your safe in a non obvious space. Again making it hard for people to find. For ideas on where to store your safe check out our blog post 'Safes: Which one do I need and where should I install it?'
Thirdly, install a home alarm. There are many people who don’t get alarms installed fearing they will cost too much. There are many cost effective home alarm systems on the market currently and Lock Supplies can assist you in finding the best fit for your house and organise it to be installed correctly. If the criminals have made their way into your house, slowly, a home alarm will make it very difficult for them to successfully rob you of all your possessions.
So you’ve locked your front door with a deadlock, locked all windows and installed a home alarm but what about your shed or garage? Side or backyard gates? You want to avoid the criminals from entering your backyard to break into your house. If they enter your backyard they are then hidden away from the road and neighbours, and can take longer to figure out their game plan on how they will rob you. Try and avoid storing any valuables in your shed. However if you do in fact store your valuable tools and such in your shed, secure it with a lock or padlock.
Lastly there are some easy additional ways you can secure your home when you leave for a holiday. Ask your neighbours if they can clear your letterbox every few days so mail doesn’t pile up. Ask them if they can put your bin out and back in again on bins days. Ask a family member or friend to pop around and mow your lawn or water your garden. Leave lights on in the bedroom or lounge room making it look like someone is home. If you just bought a new tv or game console, do not leave the empty boxes outside advertising to the world of your new purchases. Bring in items such as bikes, surfboards, children’s toys and any other items you may usually leave outside, so you are not attractive to potential criminals watching your home.
Bonus tip
Don’t announce to the world on social media you are going on a holiday. Don’t announce your leaving and returning dates or how far you’re going etc. This is all very useful information for someone looking for an easy target.

There are many different choices of safes on the market and it can be daunting trying to figure out which one serves your purpose the best. Once you’ve determined what it is you want to keep in your safe you are in a better position to research which safe is best for your needs.
Home safes are the perfect position to keep important documents such as passports, birth certificates and such keeping them secure and out of reach from thieving hands. The position of your safe is also something to consider when installing it within your home.
When burglars break into homes the first place they usually go to is walk in robes or bedroom cupboards searching for any safes installed. Be creative, burglars usually do not enter children bedrooms, bathroom sink cupboards, linen cupboards under towels, these are all unusual places to hide safes. Try and avoid areas such as garages and shed’s as you want to make it hard for the burglars to find the safe. You also do not want to give them a space where they can essentially remain undetected whilst they try and crack open your safe.
You want to ensure your safe is of industry standards and is covered by protection warranties. When selecting a fire resistant safe you need to be aware that no safe is completely fire proof. Stay clear of sales tactics which push for fire proof safes. Fire resistant safes will protect documents from extreme heat for up to 2 hours. Fire resistant safes will protect paper whilst a data safe will protect data and media. Again what is it that you are wanting to protect?
Come in store today to discuss with us your requirements and we will ensure you walk away with the exact safe you’ve been needing all along. Need it installed? Don’t worry we can assist you with installation quotes and service also.

Some states restrictions have lifted and some states restrictions have tightened. Wherever you are and whatever your current circumstances are, there is still a demand in letterbox deliveries. Therefore there should be an increase in peoples knowledge and focus on securing their letterboxes for safe storage of their private mail and deliveries.
Regardless of the pandemic people are still being opportunistic in accessing private mail boxes and stealing mail and therefore accessing details that could put the owners at risk of having their identities or money stolen. As you can imagine if you are in a state that is in lockdown one of the only reasons you can leave your home is for exercise. This increases the foot traffic walking past your valuable mail boxes, which could possibly increase your chances of being a target of theft.
It is not uncommon for letterbox security to be overlooked when the focus is generally spent on securing the front door and windows to your home. There are a few tips to ensure that your mail being delivered remains in your letterbox until you need to access it.
Firstly ensure you have a big enough mailbox to account for the amount of mail you receive. There is nothing more enticing for opportunistic people than mail protruding from the letterbox slot.
Secondly invest in a quality letterbox lock such as the Carbine LBX & LBX Pro Letterbox Locks. Nine in ten mailboxes use such poor security locks that they might as well be left open. The Carbine LBX & LBX Pro Letterbox Locks are Australia’s only easy retrofit letterbox lock that stops identity thieves in their tracks.
The Carbine LBX is
Don't leave your mail to chance, invest in a letterbox lock that secures your valuable identity and deliveries so you have one less thing to worry about during this trying time we find ourselves experiencing. Stay safe, stay home, keep your valuables safe and at home, where they belong

Keyless locks on front doors come in many different shapes, sizes and levels of technology. Some are operated by a keypad, some are operated by a NFC connectivity on your android phone and some can even be operated using a RFID sticker on an existing key, card or phone. I mean how many times have we tried to carry every bag of shopping from the car to the house in one trip and then becoming unstuck at the front door needing a free hand to use your key. Get a product that can allow you to simply hover your phone (with RFID sticker) over the front of the lock, effective and incredibly helpful.
Whilst all of this sounds high tech and space age, it is actually a time saving and stress free addition to your home. The freedom to come and go from your front door without having to stress whether you have the key is an asset to activities such as walking the dogs, going for a run, gardening out the front, chatting to the neighbour and keeping your dogs or children safe inside, etc.
As an example the following product allows all of the above and its very cost effective to install.
Carbine CEL 3 in 1 is a great locking solution for your front door. The CEL 3 in 1 touchscreen lock is a digital lock that can be offered in several variants. It provides a keyless locking solution making it more convenient to access your home. As you’d expect from it’s name there are three modes of access;
This digital lock is great for your home, granny flat, investment property or small office. It provides a keyless locking solution which allows you to give access to contractors, tradies, cleaners, short-term tenants and children when you are not there. This product comes with everything you need to install it. Requires 4 AA batteries to operate. The leverset and deadbolt model fits a standard 54mm lockset hole with no additional drilling required, making it very easy to install for DIY projects.

Do you have or intend to have a screen door secured to your house? If so, then this is something to consider when thinking about a digital door lock. Screen doors require keys to lock therefore if you are already opening the screen door with a key and then entering a code to enter your hardwood door, it kind of defeats the purpose of investing in a keyless door lock. Screen doors will also interfere with the aesthetics of the digital door lock placed on your hardwood door, shielding the stylish lock of choice.
Secondly, what functionality do you want in a digital door lock? Do you simply just want to ditch the keys? Do you want a combination lock with can be operated by both code and keys? Share access remotely? Lock and unlock using your smart phone? Obtain an audit trail from who is accessing your lock? There are many different functionalities in keyless entry door locks, think about your ultimate goal when shopping around for a digital door lock.
What do you currently have on your front door? is there a standard door lock already installed in your door? assessing what is already secured to your door will make the process of installing a digital door lock easier. Retrofitting a digital door lock on to you door will make the process less stressful and messy. By selecting the right fit for your door you will not be left with unsightly holes or marks.
Want to smarten up your door lock? What home automation do you currently have running? Do you have an Amazon Alexa, Samsung Smart Things, Apple HomeKit or Google Home? Choosing the correct lock which can easily connect to your home automation system is going to make entry to you home much simpler. There is no point choosing a lock that doesn’t connect to your current home automation or the home automation you want to invest in.
Considering all the above, what is your budget? There are many different digital door locks in the market currently and they can vary in cost. The more smart, functional, and stylish they are the more they are likely to cost. Consider what matters most to you in your new digital door lock and what you are willing to sacrifice should you have a particular budget.
If technology is something that can confuse or overwhelm you then doing your research before shopping for a digital door lock will cut down on these feelings for you. Knowing what you want and what you are willing to spend will get that special, stylish, functional digital door lock onto your front door sooner rather than later.
]]>1. Hide your valuables. As mentioned above many people leave their belongings in their cars. Whether it's your mobile phone, cash, laptop/iPad, handbags or tools, chances are everyone has something of value in their car at some point. If there are valuables on show in a car this is incredibly enticing to a car thief. They may stop at just stealing those items on show or they might steal your whole car. Important note: if your wallet is left in your car your drivers licence is easily accessed with your home address. All of a sudden your car break in has become a car break in, car theft and house break in all in one day.
2. Hide your car keys! Don’t leave your keys hanging on a hook or in a key bowl visible from your front door. Prying eyes will sight your keys hanging there and after breaking into your home, will be easily accessed. Some thieves will break into your home with the sole purpose of stealing your car. This may be because they want your particular make and model of car or they are opportunistic and require your car to commit another crime. Do not make it easy for criminals to complete their tasks.
3. Park in a secured area. The obvious and safe place to keep your cars is secured in a parking garage. Keeping your car parked in a garage will also keep your car safe from weather damage and keep it cool in the summer months. If you cannot park your car in a locked garage then keep it close to your home in a well lit space. This will easily identify any potential thief trying to break into a car. Try and avoid leaving your windows down when you have left your car. This is very enticing to a potential car thief and makes stealing your car that much easier.
4. Lock your car. This might be a no brainer however quite often people will keep their cars unlocked as they quickly run into the shops or petrol station. This is more common with older vehicles requiring a key door lock. However newer cars which have remote central locking can also be overlooked as being locked when they are not. Pushing the unlock button rather than the lock button or forgetting to press the button altogether leaves your car unknowingly an easy target. Physically check a door handle as you go to walk away to ensure your remote locking has worked.
5. And lastly, install a car alarm if your car does not already have one. Install a high quality car alarm that is not easily set off by a passing truck. Car alarms do not physically stop a car from being stolen but they do however alert people around that something has triggered an alarm and people will more often than not look out their window or door to see where that sound is coming from and why.

Back in 2017 it was announced that new legislation regarding firearms would come into effect on 1 July 2017 and as we previously mentioned license holders had until 30 June 2018 to comply. SAPOL have posted handy reference material outlining the changes, all of which can be found on their website and more importantly have recently made the following statement:
"It is known in some cases recent demand for compliant safes has exceeded supplies currently available at some retail outlets. Licensees who have not yet upgraded their safe or achieved compliance by other means, but who are able to produce evidence of having ordered a new safe (e.g. receipt, invoice, purchase order) or are actively in the process of achieving compliance in the short term are advised to produce those documents or evidence to police officers if the need arises. This includes those who have received Registrar approval for the use of prescribed safes or storage in some other manner as approved by the Registrar."

Level 1 requires the safe to be constructed of a minimum 2mm structural grade steel.
What is a Level 2 Safe?

When should the required 'Level' be considered (for A+B Class firearms)?

Level 2 : Firearms are kept in an outbuilding.
as a side note; Category C,D or H all require Level 2 storage whether under main roof or in an outbuilding.
Do i need to bolt my safe down?

As much as SAPOL have stated there will be some leniency, they have not set the length of this 'extended grace period' - so best to act now or risk loss of license and firearms

Extreme temperatures should be avoided if possible. The ideal location for a gun safe is under the main roof of your home where insulation and home security is better than in an outdoor shed.
With many Australians living in tropical climates, it is a wise idea to invest in a moisture absorber for the inside of your safe to prevent rust taking hold of your rifles. Moisture absorbing crystals from your local hardware should do the trick.
It certainly isn’t a wise idea to advertise to the world that you have guns and where they are located. As a preventative measure take the time to position your safe away from public view, to prevent the wrong people knowing about your gun collection.

]]>The quality of your safe is one of the most important aspects you must consider. A majority of standard safes are built with 12-gauge steel. This type of steel is strong, but can still weaken under the force of an axe or crowbar, as well as being considerably light. In the case of a break in, 12-gauge steel is light enough for thieves to carry out of your home. However, by choosing to purchase a safe out of 10-gauge steel leaves you with an ultimately stronger safe and better protection for you and your family.
It is also important to inspect the fit of your safe door, to ensure it doesn’t allow for easy prying.
Determining how much you’re willing to spend on your gun safe is an entirely personal factor. There are some gun owners who require a top of the range safe. There are also rifle owners who will not require the extra protection or features and a standard gun safe meets their needs perfectly.
If you have an extensive gun collection, we recommended investing in a top of the range gun safe. This is to provide you with peace of mind surrounding your family safety and collection protection.
When choosing the size of your gun safe take into consideration the number of guns that you require safe storage for as well as their sizes.
There is no point investing in a large safe when you only have handguns; you’ll simply be wasting space. Consider investing in one for handheld storage that also has storage for other valuables that you may wish to keep safe.
If you are an avid gun collector, you’ll probably wish to expand your collection at some point so keep this in mind when purchasing.
- Heavy gauge steel - 2mm all-round for Level 1 or 3mm all-round for Level 2.
- Draw Bolts – Average safes have only one or two draw bolts, but a good quality safe will multiple. The more bolts you have, the safe you are.
- Fire Safety and Seal – If you’re looking for a safe that has fire protection look for one with concrete lining for fire protection, a fire seal and a fire rating from the manufacturer.

In South Australia, a ‘prescribed safe’ is simple a gun safe made of steel rated at level one. This means that they have a thickness of a mere 1.6mm.
Many gun owners make the mistake of purchasing a safe that barely meets these requirements. This doesn’t provide the greatest level of protection. The best thing you can do for security is to get a durable and strong safe that exceeds these capabilities - even if it does cost a little more.
Often, people who purchase gun safes don’t consider how much the contents are worth. Buying a cheap safe that just barely meets the requirements does not protect your belongings. Would you keep $3000 cash in a letterbox? Probably not. So the way in which you store firearms, which are a significant investment, should reflect the value of your guns.
There are weight requirements that deem whether a safe needs to be fixed or not. With smaller firearms, often the legal specifications don’t require secure fixings. At Lock Supplies, we believe that you should always fix your safe, big or small. If you can get your safe into your home when you buy it, a criminal can just as easily take it out. Even if it's a small firearm, get a professional to adequately fix your safe to the wall or ground for maximum security.
Although budget may be a concern for many gun owners, you shouldn’t always elect to purchase the cheapest option. Often the lower ranges of safes do not have the same locking capabilities as some of the midrange products. This ties into the bare requirements of a gun safe, as some of the cheaper options still met the parameters outlined by the State Government. However, to protect your guns from the outside world, you should be considering the best safe you can get.
If you make any of these gun safe mistakes, it may be time to upgrade. If that’s the case, give the team at Lock Supplies a call or swing by, the gun safe experts will show you exactly what you should consider and why.
